First show in 3 weeks, and not a lot of time to prepare, but with all the new material it more or less planned itself. The 2 hours just flew by and the show was over before I knew it. I think I found a nice mix of new and old, stuff I've played in the past and stuff I played for the first time.

I'd picked up the Pretty Maids and Dark Moor before I left on the trip and had planned a spotlight before the show got pre-empted for a hockey game.

The Megadeth track was the advanced single from United Abominations, and is the rerecording of one of my favourite Megadeth songs. The new version is a duet with Cristina Scabbia of Lacuna Coil. I love the song, and this version is good, but I'm not convinced it needed to be remade, especially as a duet.

I'm glad we got the Angtoria. For those who don't know, Angtoria is a new band built around the vocals of Sarah Jezebel Deva, who has provided the female vocals for Cradle of Filth, Mortiis, and Covenent among others. It's great to finally hear Ms Deva in a project of her own.

And a very special thanks to David and Wheezer for making Pain's awesome cover of Eleanor Rigby available. I've loved this track for ages, but haven't been able to get a copy to play on the show. Enter David, who sent Wheezer the CD, and Wheezer in turn kindly donated it to the Tapping the Ether library.

Apologies

There's been a large--too large--gap in updates, for which I apologize. There are two major reasons for this.

The first is that I had more surgery (planned this time) for a biopsy of two lymph nodes in my throat. Thankfully I turned up cancer and tuberculosis free, but I was diagnosed with sarcoid, which is a medical way of saying a non-specific attack on the immune system causing swollen lymph nodes. Although I was just off for a week, it took longer to heal, and was very painful.

The second is that my wife and I too a belated honeymoon and drove down to Texas. We had a great trip, which I've been talking about on the show. It took 5 days to drive down (we detoured to spend a day in Washington D.C.), we spent another 4 days staying with my mother-in-law, and then 4 days to drive back. We stopped off to see Cincinnati Metal God Wheezer, who kindly took us out to dinner (thanks again, Wheeze!)

With the exception of getting caught between two tornadoes in Texas (my first time-talk about brown-trousers time!) and encountering an insufferable bitch at the border, our trip was a resounding success.

Back at the station, a whole truckload of new releases came in while I was gone, so expect new reviews on the blog over the next few weeks.

As you can see, I followed up last week's Warlock spotlight with a segment on Doro's solo career.
I also slipped in a Savatage spotlight, focussing largely on the bands earlier career. Next week I plan to continue with some of their more recent output.

*note: "Crabsody In Blue" is from the Australian release of "Let There Be Rock", and has never been released internationally.

Warlock is the original band fronted by Doro Pesch. They were quite popular in Europe in the mid to late '80s, but virtually unknown in North American. After her force solo album, Force Majeure, Doro was taken under the wing of Gene Simmons, who worked his usual magic (i.e. almost ended her career) with the disappointing Doro album. Intended to introduce Doro to an American audience, the album was watered down and over-produced, causing listeners to dismiss her as a Lita Ford wannabe. Thankfully Doro's career has continued to thrive in Europe, and her material is now readily availabe in America.
